Janice RodrigueMoose Jaw, Saskatchewan, is giving skilled workers a new chance to settle in Canada. The city has announced its priority jobs and sectors for the Rural Community Immigration Pilot (RCIP), a program designed to help workers in rural communities find permanent residency in Canada. Moose Jaw is the last of 14 communities across the country to launch this program.
How Can You Qualify for the Moose Jaw RCIP?
The RCIP is based on getting a job offer from a local employer. To qualify, you need:
- A job offer from a designated employer approved by the city.
- The job must be in a priority occupation and priority sector.
- The city’s economic development office must recommend you.
- You must meet other basic eligibility requirements for the pilot, like work experience, language skills, and educational background.
The program is designed to help local employers fill jobs that are hard to staff in rural communities.

Why Priority Sectors and Jobs Matter
To get recommended by the community, your job must be in a priority sector and a priority occupation. Even if your occupation is on the list, you won’t qualify if your employer is outside a priority sector or not designated by the local economic office.
Other Requirements for Applicants
- Work Experience or Education: At least one year of related work experience in the last three years, or graduation from an eligible school in Canada.
- Language Skills: English or French language test results within the past two years. The required level depends on your job.
- Education: Canadian secondary school or post-secondary certificate/diploma/degree (or foreign equivalent).
- Financial Support: You must have enough money to support yourself and your family during settlement.
If you meet all the criteria, your employer will send your recommendation to the community. Once approved, you can apply to the federal government for permanent residence. You may also get a work permit to start working while your permanent residency application is being processed.
