The Canadian government is making it easier for newcomers to get their Social Insurance Number (SIN), an important number for working, paying taxes, and accessing government benefits.
What is a SIN and Why is it Important?
A Social Insurance Number (SIN) is a unique 9-digit number that everyone in Canada needs to:
- Work
- Pay taxes
- Access government benefits
Without a SIN, it’s hard to do most things in Canada, so getting one as soon as you arrive is important.
What is SIN@Entry?
In 2025-2026, Canada will launch a new service called SIN@Entry to make getting a SIN easier for newcomers. This service is designed for people applying for work permits or permanent residence.
Here’s what you need to know about SIN@Entry:
- You will be able to request your SIN directly through your IRCC secure account (the account used for your immigration process).
- There’s no need to apply for your SIN separately—everything will be done in one place.
- This service could cut in-person visits to Service Canada locations by 50%, meaning fewer long wait times for those visiting in person.
Benefits of SIN@Entry
- Quick and easy: Get your SIN right after your immigration application is approved.
- No extra trips: No need to visit a Service Canada office—everything happens online.
- Faster service: Less crowding at Service Canada offices, so everyone can get quicker help.
What’s the Difference Between SIN@Entry and SIN@Landing?
While SIN@Entry is a new service launching in 2025-2026, SIN@Landing is already available at select airports in Canada.
Here’s how they differ:
- SIN@Entry: Get your SIN through your IRCC secure account during your immigration process.
- SIN@Landing: Available at airports, this service allows Temporary Residents (TRs) and Permanent Residents (PRs) to apply for their SIN as soon as they arrive in Canada.
Airports Offering SIN@Landing:
- Toronto Pearson International Airport
- Montréal Trudeau International Airport
- Vancouver International Airport
- Halifax Stanfield International Airport
- Calgary International Airport
- Edmonton International Airport
Keep in mind, these airport offices are not open 24/7, so it’s a good idea to check their hours before your arrival. If they’re closed, you can always apply for your SIN later online or at another Service Canada office.
Improvements Coming for eSIN (Electronic SIN) Applications
The Canadian government is also improving the online SIN application process, which is great news for anyone applying for their SIN online.
- By September 2025, the new eSIN system will be faster and more efficient, reducing the processing time from 5 days to just minutes!
- Starting in May 2025, you’ll also be able to access a digital copy of your SIN confirmation letter as a PDF through your My Service Canada Account (MSCA). This digital version can be stored securely and reduces the need for paper letters.
Who Needs a SIN?
You need a SIN if you want to:
- Work in Canada
- Access government programs and benefits
This includes:
- Permanent residents
- Temporary residents (if you plan to work in Canada)
- International students (if your study permit allows part-time work)
How Do You Get a SIN?
Currently, there are 3 ways to apply for a SIN:
- In-person: Go to a Service Canada location, and you can get your SIN the same day.
- Online: Apply through My Service Canada Account (MSCA), and your SIN will be processed in 5 business days.
- By mail: If you choose to apply by mail, it will take 20 business days to process.

Q1: Can I get my SIN before I arrive in Canada?
- No, you need to be in Canada to apply for your SIN. However, the new SIN@Entry service will make the process faster and easier once you’re here.
Q2: Do I need a SIN if I’m not working right away?
- Yes! Even if you’re not working right away, it’s good to have a SIN in case you need government benefits or services in the future.
Q3: Can I get a SIN if I’m a visitor or just coming to Canada temporarily?
- Generally, only people with work permits, study permits, or permanent residency are eligible for a SIN. Visitors who are not working won’t need one.
Q4: What happens if I lose my SIN?
- If you lose your SIN, you can apply for a replacement online or in person at a Service Canada location.
Q5: How do I keep my SIN safe?
- Your SIN is private and should be kept secure. Avoid sharing it unless absolutely necessary (e.g., for work or taxes).
